Republican state Rep. Kathy Rapp, who chairs the majority for the legislature's Health Committee, sent a letter Thursday requesting Pennsylvania's auditor general review Pitt's state and federal funding. According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, “Deeming it a “proactive step” in once again proving that its practices are lawful, the University of Pittsburgh says it’s asked a Washington law firm to review its fetal tissue research practices. In a statement Thursday, the university confirmed it has retained Hyman Phelps & McNamara — a firm that lists internal investigations among its main areas of practice — to do an independent review of what’s become a hot-button issue among conservative media circles and anti-abortion advocates.” [Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, 9/9/21]
