Cao: “I’m Pro-Life, That’s Where I’ll Always Be, In Every Single Thing I Do.” According to Washington Post, “’First of all, what you’re trying to ask is where I stand. I’m pro-life, that’s where I’ll always be, in every single thing I do,’ Cao said. ‘My opponent, on the other hand, wants abortion up to the moment of birth. Most Americans do not agree with that. The Dobbs case put this matter back where it belongs, which is in the states. As a federal legislator, this is not within our purview.’” [Washington Post, 10/6/22]
Cao Claimed That Abortion Policy Was A State Issue. According to Washington Post, “Questions on abortion led to some of the most impassioned responses of the night. Farnsworth asked the candidates what federal action they would take on abortion, considering there are multiple pieces of legislation in Congress pending right now, chief among them a 15-week abortion ban proposed by Sen. Lindsey O. Graham (R-S.C.). Cao, however, stuck to the party line that has emerged among numerous Republican congressional candidates, who continue to insist abortion policy is a state issue even as Graham has pledged to push the federal legislation forward if Republicans win control of Congress.” [Washington Post, 10/6/22]
Democrat Jennifer Wexton Noted That Cao, In Supporting The Overturning Of A Constitutional Right To Abortion, In Turn Supported Allowing States To Ban Abortion. According to Washington Post, “She noted that she voted to codify Roe v. Wade and that Cao, in supporting the overturning of a constitutional right to abortion, in turn supports allowing states to ban abortion, and possibly even access to contraception. Cao disputed the part about contraception, calling that ‘fearmongering’ and an issue separate from abortion.” [Washington Post, 10/6/22]
Cao Positioned Himself As An Unambiguous Supporter Of The Demise Of Roe. According to Washington Post, “Cao, the former Navy captain and Vietnamese refugee running against Rep. Jennifer Wexton (D), and the Republicans in the two other competitive Virginia districts — state Sen. Jen Kiggans (R-Virginia Beach) in the 2nd and Prince William County Supervisor Yesli Vega in the 7th — have positioned themselves as firm opponents to abortion and unambiguously supported the demise of Roe.” [Washington Post, 7/29/22]
Cao Stated That He Was “Thrilled That Scotus Appears To Be Overturning Roe V. Wade.” Cao tweeted, “Every unborn child is a human being, and I am thrilled that SCOTUS appears to be overturning Roe v. Wade. However, the circumstances surrounding the leak are deeply concerning, and are inexcusable in our highest court.#RoeVWade” [Twitter, @HungCao_VA, 5/3/23]
The California Bill Removed The Requirement That A Coroner Had To Investigate “Deaths Related To Or Following Known Or Suspected Self-induced Or Criminal Abortion.” According to Los Angeles Times, “The bill, which you can read here, removes the requirement that a coroner has to investigate ‘deaths related to or following known or suspected self-induced or criminal abortion.’ The bill prohibits using a coroner’s statements on the certificate of fetal death ‘to establish, bring, or support a criminal prosecution or civil cause of damages against any person.’” [Los Angeles Times, 5/5/22]
The Purpose Of The Legislation Was To Prevent Criminal Prosecution Of People Who Experienced A Miscarriage, A Stillbirth, Or A Self-induced Abortion. According to ABC 7 News, “‘Basically the whole point is we want to make sure that if you do experience a miscarriage, if you experience a stillbirth, if you experience a self-induced abortion, you have a self-induced abortion, that you are not criminally prosecuted for that,’ said Assemblywoman Buffy Wicks, the Democrat representing the East Bay and one of the bill’s sponsors. But it still allows authorities ‘to be able to investigate the facts of a newborn child’s death, including whether the child was born living and when and how the child died.’” [ABC 7 News, 11/3/22]
Cao Claimed The Bill Was “The Most Evil Thing” He Had Seen. According to Washington Post, “Cao pivoted to a California bill that had caused a stir in antiabortion circles, where a false narrative going viral on the internet said California Democrats wanted to decriminalize infanticide. ‘This is the most evil thing I have seen,’ Cao said, although the bill sponsor said it is intended to prevent prosecution for miscarriages or pregnancy-related deaths, not murder, of newborns.” [Washington Post, 7/29/22]
Cao Compared The Legislation To The Holocaust. According to Washington Post, “Then he went further: ‘The Nazis did this. They take Jewish babies and just take the legs and just smash the babies and kill them. You think that can’t happen in this country?’ He did not respond to questions for this article about the comments.” [Washington Post, 7/29/22]
