Pompeo Called Roe A “Wholly Unjust, Unconstitutional Ruling.” According to an editorial by Pompeo for the European Centre for Law and Justice, “It has been nearly 50 years since the Supreme Court bowed to public pressure and issued a wholly unjust, unconstitutional ruling in its decision on Roe v. Wade, in which the Court fabricated a constitutional “right” to perform an abortion that is nowhere to be found in our founding documents. Now, the Court has before them a case – Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization – which gives it an opportunity to finally correct this grievous error which has resulted in the disgraceful murder of tens of millions of unborn children.” [European Centre for Law and Justice, 2/8/22]
Pompeo Said “Prayers Answered” In Reaction To The Overturning Of Roe. According to a tweet from Pompeo’s personal account, “JUST IN – Prayers answered. SCOTUS votes YES to life in its landmark reversal of Roe v. Wade. Those who believe every life bears the image of our Creator must now persevere in our fight to save the unborn.” [Twitter - @mikepompeo, 6/24/22]
Pompeo Called The Dobbs Decision “Good” And “Lovely” And Said “We Should Be Proud” Because “The Court Got It Right” In “Overturning A Horrible Decision From 1973.” According to a transcript of Pompeo’s appearance on Fox News’ Life, Liberty, & Levin, “MIKE POMPEO, FORMER U.S. SECRETARY OF STATE: Well, it's a good decision. It's a good decision because it's deeply grounded in our Constitution and in America's founding and its history. It's a lovely thing to -- it'll protect more human lives. It'll return this debate to the states, where it was for goodness, a hundred fifty to two hundred years. We should be proud of that decision today because the Court got it right. I hope everybody who is talking about the Constitution and making sure that the liberty and democracy stand recognizes that this decision certainly did that. They gave power back to the states. They didn't pull it into the Courts. They let the political processes be where they ought to be. And for that, it is a remarkable decision overturning a horrible decision from 1973.” [Nexis – Fox News, 6/26/22]
Pompeo Said The Court’s Decision “Honored Our Founders And Our Nation And Our Judeo-Christian Heritage.” According to a transcript of Pompeo’s appearance on Fox News’ Life, Liberty, & Levin, “They got their institutional power exactly right. They honored our founders and our nation and our Judeo-Christian heritage. And at the same time, it will give the opportunity for those of us who believe that each one of these babies is precious the chance to go out and make that case to the American people.” [Nexis – Fox News, 6/26/22]
Pompeo Blamed Roe Decision For Taking Away “The Capacity To Have Reasoned Debate” On Abortion Rights. According to CBS News, “Abortion rights: ‘I believe deeply that Roe took away from the political process the capacity to have reasoned debate on what is a deeply held view for so many Americans time. I hold this view intensely. I believe in the right for every child to be born with all of my heart. I believe it because of science, and I believe it because of my faith. And Roe took away the capacity for us to make that case and to argue this out in the process that I think our founders would have preferred. And so, if Roe, in fact, is overturned in a week or so, I think that will return this to the states. There'll be heated debate. I hope it's within the lines of argument and reason. And then I hope every state will choose to protect the unborn every way they can.’” [CBS News, 6/24/22]
Pompeo Posted Picture Of His Swearing In By Justice Alito, Saying “Well Done Faithful Servant” Following Alito’s Opinion That Struck Down Roe. According to a tweet from Pompeo’s personal account, “Well done faithful servant.” [Twitter - @mikepompeo, 6/24/22]
Pomepo Congratulated Trump For His Supreme Court Picks Following Overturning Of Roe. According to a tweet from Pompeo’s personal account, “Historians will write about you, Mr. President @realDonaldTrump. Returning America to its Constitution with your Court picks matters. Well done. Americans, born and unborn, will benefit for decades.” [Twitter - @mikepompeo, 6/24/22]
Pompeo Tweeted “I Pray For The Reversal Of Roe V. Wade.” According to a tweet from Pompeo’s personal account, “I pray for the reversal of Roe v. Wade, but a lot of hard work will come after that. Every human being, born and unborn, has a fundamental right to life, and it is our calling to guard and secure it.” [Twitter - @mikepompeo, 5/19/22]
Pompeo Said Abortion Decision Reflecting What Was Leaked Would Be “A Glorious Thing.” According to a transcript of Pompeo’s appearance on Fox News’ Hannity, “MIKE POMPEO, FOX NEWS CONTRIBUTOR: Well, Sean, I've read about the first two thirds of it now. It reads like a writing of a first draft from someone who believes deeply in the United States Constitution in the very way that I know Justice Alito does. So, I'm going to give you a short odds that it's likely his writing from a first draft. It doesn't mean that's how it ends. Second, a decision that reflected largely what is in that draft would be a glorious thing for the United States of America. It would in the first instance be a return to constitutional judging, right? We have a series of justices returning to our foundational roots, wiping off the book something that even liberal justices understood made no real sense. They had to defend it because of their own views on abortion. But this is a good piece of judging, a good piece of constitutional work if it ends the way that this draft appears to be heading. Second, the states will get to sort this out. That's the right place for this to be sorted out but I am also optimistic that when these rights are returned to people all across America, that we will save lives, save lives of the unborn all across this country and that would make a decision along the lines of what's in this potential draft a really glorious thing for the United States. Good constitutional law and protecting unborn children, a really good outcome, Sean.” [Nexis – Fox News, 5/2/22]
Pompeo Said Overturning Abortion Rights Would Have Positive Effect On Right To Privacy. According to a transcript of Pompeo’s appearance on Fox News’ Hannity, “HANNITY: Okay, and the thing is it would go back to the states. I doubt very much, Mr. Secretary, that New York, California, Oregon, Washington state, Illinois, are going to change the law in any way, shape, manner or form. I mean, we now have states -- remember the infamous comments of Governor Northam. Well, first, the baby will be born and then we'll give the baby care and then we'll let the mother talk to the doctor and then they decide whether the baby lives or dies. At that point, that's called infanticide. POMPEO: Oh, that's certainly true, Sean. There'll be states that have already put themselves in the business of doing precisely what Governor Northam described. They're not likely to change in the short run. I'm convinced over time when people all across America have the opportunity to see the good that can come from changing that that. Maybe not New York, maybe not California, but a state that's now got Governor Youngkin, a state like Virginia, and some of the states that are much closer calls. Overall, I think this will have a really net positive effect on America's capacity, not only to have our right to privacy to find in the right way but also protect more children.” [Nexis – Fox News, 5/2/22]
Pompeo Said Bill To Codify Abortion Rights Was A Power Grab And Unconstitutional. According to a tweet from Pompeo’s personal account, “Good to see the radical abortion bill fail to pass in the Senate today. It was a pure power grab and wholly unconstitutional. I pray that Roe is overturned - then our real work will begin. Conservatives everywhere must be ready to fight for life!” [Twitter - @mikepompeo, 5/11/22]
Pompeo Tweet Called The Women’s Health Protection Act The “Abortion On Demand Until Birth” Act. According to a tweet from Mike Pompeo’s personal account, “The right to life is the first right, and without it, the other rights are meaningless. The Democrats' lack of respect for that right is on full display as they try to sneak in a vote on the Abortion on Demand Until Birth Act.” [Twitter, @mikepompeo, 2/28/22]
Pompeo Said He Opposed Abortion When Running For Chair Of The Kansas Republican Party In 2007. According to the Wichita Eagle, “A Wichita businessman and a senator from western Kansas plan to run for the top position in the Kansas Republican Party. So far, Sen. Tim Huelskamp, R- Fowler, and Mike Pompeo, co-founder of Thayer Aerospace and president of Sentry International -- a business that sells oilfield pumping units and other equipment -- are the only two running for the Kansas Republican Party chairmanship. Kelly Arnold, chairman for the Sedgwick County Republicans, said it will be important that the new chair have the ability to raise money and bring the party together. ‘We're looking for people who have visions how to change the party and how we run campaigns in the 2008 election,’ he said. The chair will oversee the Kansas Republican Party, which is in charge of recruiting Republican candidates across the state. The elected chair will replace Tim Shallenburger, who completed a two-year term at the end of 2006. On Jan. 27, 178 voting members of the Kansas Republican Party will elect the new chair at the party's annual Kansas Day celebration in Topeka. Both candidates are opposed to abortion and stressed the importance of fundraising and communication.” [Wichita Eagle, 1/6/07]
Pompeo Called Abortion “Deeply Immoral.” According to a transcript of Pompeo’s interview with Tony Perkins, “What we don’t want is that money being used for ill – for purposes of abortion. That takes money to end lives that should go to promoting health issues. And so this policy, in fact, ensures that the risk that any taxpayer would have to underwrite this deeply immoral activity – takes that risk down while making sure that we continue to provide U.S. dollars to those places where we fund foreign NGOs to deliver healthcare for those who truly do need it all around the world.” [U.S. State Department, 3/26/19]
As Secretary Of State, Pompeo Said Abortion “Isn't A Human Right, It Takes A Human Life.” According to the Des Moines Register, “He also focused extensively on the administration's efforts to promote ‘religious freedom’ around the world. He found a warm reception in the crowd of religious conservatives. ‘Our ability to defend these rights abroad must begin with our own powerful example here at home,’ Pompeo said. ‘America sets the tone for the rest of the world in this respect, and our administration has defended the rights of unborn like no other administration in history. Abortion, quite simply, isn't a human right, it takes a human life.’” [Des Moines Register, 7/19/20]
Pompeo Said He Was “Proud” To Be Part Of The “Most Pro-Life Administration In The History Of The United States Of America. According to a transcript of Pompeo’s speech to the Conservative Political Action Committee, “And I'm proud that we were the most pro-life administration in the history of the United States of America. (APPLAUSE) It was--it was--it was my job to deny that any taxpayer dollars from any hardworking American ever went to perform an abortion any place in the world. And we promoted adoption everywhere and always. (APPLAUSE) And don't forget too, President Trump appointed an awful lot of judges that understand the words life and liberty and the--words that have real, real meaning.” [CQ Transcripts, 2/27/21]
Pompeo Touted His Anti-Abortion Efforts As Secretary Of State. According to the Greater Fort Wayne Business Weekly, “Pompeo said one of the first things he did in his position was to ensure that taxpayer money was not funding pro-abortion rights. ‘One of the very first things I did when I was the Secretary of State was make sure none of the money you were providing, not a single taxpayer dollar, went to undermine our deep commitment to protecting the unborn everywhere in the world,’ he said.” [Greater Fort Wayne Business Weekly, 4/26/22]
Pompeo Compared The Summer Of Mercy To The Fight To End Slavery. According to a transcript of Pompeo’s remarks to the Family Research Council’s Value Voters Summit, “I want to talk to you about it from the perspective, a little bit, of Kansas, the place that I'm from. Remember this is the state that entered the Union when the struggle for slavery was upon us, and the Republicans made sure that Kansas entered the (inaudible) making sure that every human life would be free, and it mattered. This is a state that, in the early 1990s, as some of you will remember, the Summer of Mercy, when Wichita was at the center of the pro-life movement, making sure that every single innocent human being got to breathe that first breath.” [CQ Transcripts, 10/7/11]
Pompeo Compared The Timeline Of Overturning “Reprehensible Ruling” Of Plessy To That Of “Deeply Flawed” Roe. According to an editorial by Pompeo for the European Centre for Law and Justice, “In 1897, perhaps the most reprehensible ruling in the history of the Supreme Court was issued in the case Plessy v. Ferguson, which allowed legal segregation in America on the false principle that institutions could be kept “separate but equal.” This ruling took over half a century to finally be overturned, via Brown v. Board of Education, and its consequences were severe for the countless Americans who were denied their fundamental rights during that time. Now, the Court has before it a case which may overturn a deeply flawed ruling that has robbed so many human beings of their fundamental right to life. No more time should have to pass for the flawed logic of Roe to be dispensed with, and more importantly for Americans – conservatives in particular – it is time to dedicate ourselves to building a Godlier , more generous society where every human life is not seen as something expendable when convenient, but rather is recognized as indispensable and precious.” [European Centre for Law and Justice, 2/8/22]
Pompeo Said He Opposed Abortion Except If The Life Of The Mother Was In Danger. According to the Wichita Eagle, “The term ‘100 percent pro-life’ means different things to different people — and congressional candidates Mike Pompeo and Wink Hartman are no exception. As they battle for the lead in the contentious 4th District Republican primary, both candidates have claimed the ‘100 percent’ mantle to try to attract votes from abortion opponents — a key Republican voting bloc. To Pompeo, that means opposing abortion except when necessary to save the life of the woman. It's a much harder line than current state law, which allows abortion on demand in the first trimester of pregnancy and later-term abortions to preserve the woman's life or health.” [Wichita Eagle, 7/18/10]
Pompeo Opposed All Abortions Except If The Life Of The Mother Was In Danger. According to the Associated Press, “U.S. Rep. Mike Pompeo said he believes abortions should be allowed only when necessary to save the life of the mother, while his Democratic challenger Robert Tillman vows to back abortion rights. Pompeo, who was swept into office in the November 2010 conservative tide that took the House, told The Associated Press that he wouldn't support any other exception that would permit abortions, even in cases where the mother had been raped. ‘I believe that that child - however conceived - is a life and I want very much for that life to continue to exist,’ Pompeo said.” [Associated Press, 10/25/12]
2022: Pompeo: “Life Begins At Conception, With No Exception.” According to an editorial by Pompeo for the European Centre for Law and Justice, “Central to the unjust, mistaken ruling in Roe was the question of viability. In that decision, if an unborn child was considered “viable” outside the womb, an abortion ban could potentially be considered constitutionally sound. This half-measure offered by Justice Blackmun, which prohibited nearly any restrictions on abortions executed prior to that vaguely-defined point of viability, was always misguided and wholly ignorant of a fundamental truth: that human life begins at conception, with no exception.” [European Centre for Law and Justice, 2/8/22]
Personhood Legislation Could Limit Access To Some Forms Of Birth Control. According to Bustle, “House Resolution 586, otherwise known as the ‘personhood bill,’ was recently introduced into the House of Representatives and referred to committee for consideration. If this bill became law, it would dictate that human life begins at fertilization, thereby banning all abortions. Furthermore, if passed, the personhood bill could affect birth control options and access, since the anti-choice movement often believes that birth control inhibits fertilization, even though this is not necessarily accurate.” [Bustle, 1/26/17]

Permits a physician to terminate a pregnancy under such an exception only in the manner that provides the best opportunity for the unborn child to survive, unless that manner would pose a greater risk than other available methods would pose of the death or substantial and irreversible physical impairment of a major bodily function, excluding psychological or emotional conditions, of the pregnant woman.” [Congress.gov, 6/19/13]

At a stop before the dinner, Pompeo touted McMaster's move Thursday, when he joined other governors in support of Mississippi's 15-week abortion ban before the U.S. Supreme Court. ‘I've seen the difference good governors make. People who care about the economy growing (and) people who protect every human life,’ Pompeo said. ‘I've seen it when it comes to having good, safe, sound elections. I've seen it when it comes to police are actually funded in a way they could do their jobs. These are the things that make America so great, so special and make South Carolina an effective model, which many states around this country can look toward to say how can we make life better for our people.’” [The State (SC), 7/30/21]

Pompeo Announced Expansion Of Global Gag Rule To Include NGOs That Give Money To Other Groups That Perform Abortions. According to the New York Times, “The Trump administration will withhold funding from foreign nongovernmental organizations that give money to foreign groups that perform abortions, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Tuesday. In an expansion of the administration’s anti-abortion policies, Mr. Pompeo also said the government was ‘fully enforcing’ a law that prohibits groups from using United States aid to lobby on abortion issues. ‘We will enforce a strict prohibition on backdoor funding schemes and end-runs around our policy,’ Mr. Pompeo said. ‘American taxpayer dollars will not be used to underwrite abortions.’ The move builds on a 2017 announcement by the Trump administration that it was reinstating and expanding the so-called Mexico City policy. The executive action dating to 1984 — and described by critics as the ‘global gag rule’ — requires foreign nongovernmental organizations to refuse to perform abortions in exchange for receiving American funding.” [New York Times, 3/26/19]

The United States would reduce funding to the organization as punishment, Mr. Pompeo added. ‘The institutions of the O.A.S. should be focused on addressing crises in Cuba, Nicaragua and in Venezuela, not on advancing the pro-abortion cause,’ he said.” [New York Times, 3/26/19]
Pompeo Said Global Health Groups Who Have Concluded That The Global Gag Rule Results In More Pregnancies Among Rural Women Were “Just Wrong.” According to a transcript of Pompeo’s remarks at a press conference, “QUESTION: — many of the NGOs that provide healthcare on the ground, particularly in Africa and some Asian countries, tell a totally different story than what you do. They say that this is particularly hurtful to healthcare to women in the rural areas and, in fact, it will lead to greater pregnancy, more pregnancies and inevitably to more abortions. Is there – what do you – how do you respond to this and is there —SECRETARY POMPEO: Yeah, they’re just wrong. QUESTION: — anything you’re doing or can do? SECRETARY POMPEO: They’re just – they’re just wrong, Carol. They’re just wrong about that. This argument has been presented for an awfully long time, and they’re just factually wrong about that. The moneys that this administration is providing for global health remain. We are working hard. We’re working alongside those NGOs that do some phenomenal work, and the theory that somehow not protecting every human life is destroying human life is perverse on its face.” [U.S. State Department, 3/26/19]
Pompeo Said He Was “Proud” To Close “Loopholes” In The Global Gag Policy. According to a transcript of Pompeo’s remarks to the Concerned Women for America 40th Anniversary Luncheon, “SECRETARY POMPEO: Yeah. There are those who want to confuse rights from good things. We all have preferences. I love vanilla ice cream. As I can see from the table, it’s not my right to have it, but I’m going to get back to it. (Laughter.) When – we worked on a handful of things at the front end. The administration was working on its Mexico City Policy, not only to put it in place, which happened before my time, but to make sure it had the right scope, that we weren’t permitting taxpayer dollars to go to underwrite abortions anywhere in the world, through contractors, subcontractors, or through any mechanism. So I —MS NANCE: By the way, you did a fantastic job of closing loopholes on that. Thank you. (Applause.) You did that. SECRETARY POMPEO: I appreciate that. It was – yeah. It was – I was proud to do it. It’s the right thing to do. It’s the lawful thing to do, and I had a fantastic team that worked really, really hard on it. I provided the direction and guidance, but the team did really, really good work, and it will be important. It will be important for an awfully long time to come.” [U.S. State Department, 9/13/19]
Pompeo Said The United States Government Should Make Sure No Taxpayer Dollars “Will Ever Go To Funding An Organization That Is Connected To Abortion.” According to a transcript of Pompeo’s remarks to the Prestonwood Baptist Church, “SECRETARY POMPEO: So you all have the right end of the stick on this, and that’s important. Never walk away from that. Never round edges on that central issue of human dignity and protecting every human life. I get a chance to work on this now all around the world. We are an enormously generous nation. We provide humanitarian assistance all across the globe to some of the most difficult places, and we do real good. It is unfortunate that from time to time, under certain administrations, some of that money goes to underwriting the termination of life, to abortions. This President has said no, we’re not going to do that. And I, as the Secretary of State, get the chance to enforce that. We underwrite these places. We have to make sure that no U.S. taxpayer dollars, none of the money that you provide, will ever go to funding an organization that is connected to abortion. (Applause.)” [U.S. State Department, 9/20/20]
Pompeo Called Contracting Out Abortion Services To Another Party A “Shell Game.” According to a transcript of Pompeo’s interview with Tony Perkins, “SECRETARY POMPEO: So this is a historic Reagan era policy that has been undone by presidents that did not believe in the protection of human life, and when President Trump came in, we put it back in place. It essentially requires any resources that come from the American taxpayer to come along with a certification from the recipient that they would not use those monies in a way that advocated for or resulted in the absence of a protection for the unborn. What we have done to extend that is – there’s always risk that when you provide resources to one, they will sub-contract it, or they will flow that money to some other entity and thereby be able to certify that they didn’t do it but have enabled someone else to use those American dollars for that purpose. We’ve put in place programs and certification processes to prevent that from happening QUESTION: Oh, so it’s essentially stopping the pro-abortion shell game is all. I mean —SECRETARY POMPEO: That’s right. It essentially doesn’t permit a company to use a third party – you call it a shell game – to use some clever legal tool to circumvent these very important restrictions on the use of American taxpayer dollars for abortions.” [U.S. State Department, 1/24/20]
Pompeo Announced The Protecting Life In Global Health Policy To Ensure Taxpayers Would Not Fund NGOs That Promote Abortion As A Method Of Family Planning. According to a statement released by the State Department, “The United States leads the world in global health assistance and is committed to protecting life through every health program funded by American taxpayers. The Protecting Life in Global Health Assistance (PLGHA) Policy aims to ensure that U.S. taxpayer funding does not support foreign non-governmental organizations that perform or actively promote abortion as a method of family planning. Today, the State Department, in conjunction with the U.S. Departments of Defense (DoD), Health and Human Services (HHS), and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) released the Review of the Implementation of the PLGHA Policy. This review reaffirms that the United States can continue to meet its critical global health goals, while protecting life abroad through its global health assistance programs. It contains detailed information on the small number of awards affected because organizations declined to receive U.S. global health assistance under the requirements of the PLGHA Policy, how these declinations have affected awards and ongoing health assistance, and how the U.S. Government has resolved situations in which delays or gaps in services occurred. The U.S. Government is committed to protecting life, the unborn, and the dignity of the human person. U.S. Government Departments and Agencies that implement PLGHA have made information and guidance available to partners on the application of PLGHA. The U.S. Government will continue to develop materials to support partners in clearly communicating the PLGHA Policy’s intent, implementation, and compliance.” [U.S. State Department, 8/18/20]
Pompeo Signed Letter Sent To UN Members Urging Them To Join A Coalition Against Creating “A New International Right To Abortion.” According to The Guardian, “The US is understood to have written to UN member states urging them to join a ‘growing coalition’ of countries rallying against abortion, in what seems to be the latest attempt by the Trump administration to rollback women’s rights. A letter, seen by the Guardian, is believed to have been sent to governments deemed sympathetic to the administration’s view on reproductive health. In the letter signed by the secretary of state Mike Pompeo and health and human services secretary Alex Azar, governments are encouraged to sign a joint statement opposing ‘harmful’ UN policies that promote sexual and reproductive health and rights. The statement will be presented to a high-level meeting on universal health coverage at the UN general assembly on Monday, says the letter, which suggests multilateral agreements have been misinterpreted to promote pro-choice policies. ‘As a key priority in global health promotion, we respectfully request that your government join the United States in ensuring that every sovereign state has the ability to determine the best way to protect the unborn and defend the family as the foundational unity of society vital to children thriving and leading healthy lives,’ reads the letter. ‘We remain gravely concerned that aggressive efforts to reinterpret international instruments to create a new international right to abortion and to promote international policies that weaken the family have advanced through some United Nations fora. ‘Evidence of this is found in references throughout many multilateral global health policy documents to interpret ‘comprehensive sexuality education’ and ‘sexual and reproductive health’ and ‘sexual and reproductive health and rights’ to diminish the role of parents in the most sensitive and personal family-oriented issues. The latter has been asserted to mean promotion of abortion, including pressuring countries to abandon religious principles and cultural norms enshrined in law that protect unborn life. ‘These approaches undermine our shared commitment to sustainable development and to achieving health for all, leaving no one behind.’ Efforts to advance these policies at the UN, specifically at the World Health Organization, were ‘disturbing and must be challenged’, the letter said.” [The Guardian, 9/23/19]
Pompeo Said He Would Never Accept International Organizations To Claim Abortion Is A Human Right. According to a transcript of a speech entitled “Being a Christian Leader” Pompeo gave to the America Association of Christian Counselors, “International organizations will try, from time to time, to sneak language into their documents claiming that abortion is a human right. And we’ll never accept that. (Applause and cheers.) We’ve worked diligently to find every dollar that might be going to that and we have worked tirelessly and successfully now to bring it nearly to an end.” [U.S. State Department, 10/11/19]
Pompeo Called The Geneva Consensus Declaration An “Unprecedented Defense Of The Unborn.” According to a transcript of Pompeo’s press conference, “The Trump administration has had enormous success in marshalling coalitions of like-minded nations for the good of America and for the entire world. As one example: Just three weeks ago, we continued our unprecedented defense of the unborn by signing the Geneva Consensus Declaration alongside 32 other nations.” [U.S. State Department, 11/10/20]
Pompeo Signed Pact On Behalf Of The United States That Declared There Is No International Right To Abortion. According to the Washington Examiner, “The United States signed an international document joined by more than 30 countries declaring opposition to abortion. Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo participated in a virtual signing of the Geneva Consensus Declaration on Thursday, a pact focusing on ‘promoting Women’s Health and Strengthening the Family’ but stating opposition to ‘an international right to abortion.’ Other countries involved include Haiti, Egypt, Brazil, Hungary, Uganda, and Indonesia. ‘Today, we put down a clear marker. No longer can U.N. agencies reinterpret and misinterpret agreed-upon language without accountability. Member-states set the policy for the U.N. to pursue, not the other way around. Without apology, we affirm that governments have the sovereign right to make their own laws to protect innocent life and write their regulations on abortion. The stakes are too high to permit radical, divisive agendas to hinder the ability of women in countries at all stages of development to attain better health,’ Azar said in remarks. ‘Today’s Geneva Consensus Declaration builds upon last year’s joint statements for formalizing our work together to defend these critical values. Our coalition will hold multilateral organizations accountable. We will denounce these organizations when they overstep their mandates by promoting positions that can never gain consensus. We will unequivocally declare that there is no international right to abortion. We will proudly put women’s health first at every stage of life,’ he continued. Pompeo also said the pact affirmed that ‘every country has its own sovereign right to determine its own laws with respect to abortion.’ ‘Perhaps most importantly, the declaration reaffirms 'the inherent dignity and worth' of every human being by emphasizing that every human being has the fundamental right to human life. Indeed, this is what the American founders knew so clearly. It’s what we’re upholding here today, that legacy,’ he said.” [Washington Examiner, 10/23/20]
2010: Pompeo Attacked His Primary Opponent For Supporting Funding Planned Parenthood Three Decades Earlier. According to the Wichita Eagle, “Hartman and Pompeo have been dueling for the anti-abortion vote for months. But the issue moved front and center last week when the Pompeo campaign launched a TV ad accusing Hartman of supporting a group that favors abortion rights. According to the ad, ‘Hartman said we should send tax dollars to fund abortion advocate Planned Parenthood, saying it will save big dollars in years to come.’ Neither the commercial nor the accompanying statement on Pompeo's website mention that the interview with The Eagle took place 29 years ago.” [Wichita Eagle, 7/18/10]
2012: Pompeo Voted To Defund Planned Parenthood. According to the Associated Press, “The conservative Republican said that he voted while in Congress to defund Planned Parenthood, which he called the ‘largest commercial provider of abortions in the United States.’ Even though no federal money goes to fund abortions, Pompeo contended that the clinics use those federal resources to help pay for their facilities.” [Associated Press, 10/25/12]
2015: Pompeo Said He Supported Slashing Funding For Planned Parenthood. According to the Topeka Capital-Journal, “Rep. Mike Pompeo said in an interview Thursday that he has supported efforts to slash federal funding of Planned Parenthood for years and will continue to do so.” [Topeka Capital-Journal, 8/4/15]
2015: Pompeo Co-Sponsored And Voted For Bill To Ban Funding For Planned Parenthood. According to the U.S. House, Pompeo co-sponsored and voted for H.R. 3134, the “Defund Planned Parenthood Act of 2015” which “This bill prohibits, for a one-year period, the availability of federal funds for any purpose to Planned Parenthood Federation of America, Inc., or any of its affiliates or clinics, unless they certify that the affiliates and clinics will not perform, and will not provide any funds to any other entity that performs, an abortion during such period.” [Congress.gov, 9/22/15]
Pompeo Lauded The Hobby Lobby Decision. According to the Topeka Capital-Journal, “Members of the Kansas congressional delegation Monday lauded a U.S. Supreme Court ruling that federal law allows certain corporations guided by religious views to exclude contraception for women from their health insurance plans. The 5-4 decision applies to profit-seeking businesses closely controlled by a few people and application is restricted to birth control under the national health care law signed by President Barack Obama in 2010. […] U.S. Rep. Mike Pompeo said the nation's highest court made clear companies started to bring the owners' beliefs into the marketplace didn't have to surrender religious freedom. ‘All Americans, including family business owners, must be free to live and work according to their beliefs without fear of government punishment, yet the Affordable Care Act has threatened this very basic right,’ the Wichita Republican said.” [Topeka Capital-Journal, 7/1/14]

The Executive Director For Kansans For Life Questioned Why Tiller Was Provided Government Security After Attempts On His Life. According to the Omaha World Herald, “The service provided to Dr. Tiller, who was shot in 1993 by an anti-abortion extremist, goes far beyond what the government has afforded to any other abortion provider faced with threats and on-the-job violence, interviews indicate. Last June 17 he was one of 13 guests at a coffee whose host was the president. But he abruptly lost his Marshals Service protection last month, shortly after Kansas news media reported his presence at the coffee. Anti-abortion activists said Dr. Tiller's protection was objectionable because others in high-risk jobs do not receive federal protection. Said David Gittrich, executive director of Kansans For Life: "Security is at banks, and those are paid for by the banks. Security at grocery stores are paid by grocery stores. Why should we pay for his security?’” [Omaha World Herald, 4/1/97]
The Executive Director For Kansans For Life Called For Tiller’s Arrest Even After He Was Cleared By The Board Of Healing Arts. According to the Associated Press, “The state board that licenses and regulates physicians has finished its investigation of Dr. George Tiller and plans no disciplinary action against him because of the abortions he performs. The Board of Healing Arts disclosed its decision in a letter to Gov. Bill Graves. Graves asked the board to investigate whether Tiller had violated a state law restricting the use of a late-term procedure known as a ‘partial-birth abortion under Kansas law. […] In a statement, Kansans for Life suggested Tiller is violating the law, despite the board's decision and Tiller's statements that he is complying with it. ‘Dr. George Tiller should be arrested,’ the statement said.” [Associated Press, 9/30/98]
The Executive Director For Kansans For Life Said “This Is War” After Effort To Charge George Tiller With Performing Illegal Abortions Was Thrown Out By Judge. According to the Los Angeles Times, “Hours after the outgoing attorney general of Kansas charged one of the nation's few late-term abortion providers with illegally aborting viable fetuses, a judge dismissed the charges, ruling Friday that the attorney general had overstepped his authority. Atty. Gen. Phill Kline angrily vowed to get the charges reinstated. ‘This is war,’ said Mary Kay Culp, executive director of the anti-abortion group Kansans for Life. [Los Angeles Times, 12/23/06]
Pompeo Called Roe “Wholly Unjust, Unconstitutional Ruling.” According to an op-ed by Pompeo for the European Centre for Law and Justice, “It has been nearly 50 years since the Supreme Court bowed to public pressure and issued a wholly unjust, unconstitutional ruling in its decision on Roe v. Wade, in which the Court fabricated a constitutional 'right' to perform an abortion that is nowhere to be found in our founding documents. Now, the Court has before them a case – Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization – which gives it an opportunity to finally correct this grievous error which has resulted in the disgraceful murder of tens of millions of unborn children.” [European Centre for Law and Justice, 2/8/22]
Pompeo Said Life Begins At Conception, No Exceptions. According to an op-ed by Pompeo for the European Centre for Law and Justice, “Central to the unjust, mistaken ruling in Roe was the question of viability. In that decision, if an unborn child was considered ‘viable’ outside the womb, an abortion ban could potentially be considered constitutionally sound.
