Chattah Has Said She Supports The “Sanctity Of Life.” According to the Nevada Independent, “Chattah told Nevada Newsmakers in January that she supports the “sanctity of life” but declined to further clarify her position on abortion. In an interview, she said that because there’s no jurisdiction for the attorney general to engage in legislation to change that right, whether she supports it or not is irrelevant. “I have an obligation to uphold the law,” she said. “And that applies to every law in the state.”” [Nevada Independent, 4/15/22]
Chattah Supported Prosecuting And Imprisoning Women Who Have Abortions. According to the Nevada Current, “Chattah later issued a statement acknowledging the error. ‘Question 7 didn’t embed the right to terminate a pregnancy in the Constitution,’ she wrote. ‘And it didn’t embed the Nevada law protecting the right to terminate a pregnancy in the Constitution. What it did was constitutionally prohibit the Legislature from changing the law.’ Chattah wants to prosecute and imprison women who seek an abortion. Efforts to do so in other states, such as Texas, have drawn public protests. ‘The way I look at it is the same way that we do sentencing enhancements on unborn children, victims of unborn children. I would marry it to that,’ Chattah said on Nevada Newsmakers, adding she believes ‘life begins at the time of fetal heartbeat.’” [Nevada Current, 5/20/22]
Chattah Called The Democratic Focus On Abortion “Histrionic,” Called The Issue A “Hysterical Issue.” According to the Hill, “Sigal Chattah, a Republican running for attorney general in Nevada, echoed this view, calling Democrats’ moves to make abortion a major campaign issue ‘histrionic.’ ‘The way I look at this is it was essentially a gift to them to pivot from any real issue like crime,’ Chattah said. ‘Here’s the hysterical issue that’s now going to completely encompass their agenda.’” [The Hill, 6/28/22]
